Open in Google Maps The Plan Chile built a road down a coastline that fought it the whole way. The Carretera Austral runs 1,240 km from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins through fjords, rainforest and ice — three legs go by ferry because the land refused, and at the end the road simply stops at a lake. That ending is the point of going. The drive divides at Coyhaique. North is green: the fjord ferries, the Pumalín forests, Puyuhuapi's hot springs, the Queulat hanging glacier. South is bigger and emptier: Cerro Castillo's spires, Lago General Carrera's unreasonable turquoise, the marble caves, and Caleta Tortel, a town with boardwalks for streets — until the road runs out. No passes, no altitude. What it demands is time arithmetic — ferries that sail once a day, fuel two hundred kilometres apart, gravel that halves the speed — and a tolerance for weather that changes four times before lunch.
