Route Map
Open in Google Maps The Plan Most of the drives on this page are about covering country. This one refuses to: nine days, three beds — Siena, a Val d'Orcia farmhouse, Lake Trasimeno — an hour or two of white gravel a day, and the afternoons surrendered to piazzas, cellars and long lunches. Siena covers the northwest in day loops: San Gimignano at evening after the coaches leave, Volterra's alabaster, Monteriggioni's ring of walls. The farmhouse is the reason the trip exists — the strade bianche over the Crete Senesi, Pienza, Montepulciano's cellars under the town, Bagno Vignoni's hot-pool piazza, and one feral day south to Saturnia's terraces at dawn and Pitigliano on its tufa cliff. The close is Umbrian and gentler: Trasimeno from Castiglione del Lago, a day for Assisi's frescoes and Perugia's buried fortress, and Cortona on the way home.
